Sergii V. Antonov

Sergii Antonov the Director and Founder of Medical and Reproductive Law Center, barrister.

S. Antonov has 20-year experience in legal practice in the field of medical, reproductive, civil, family, labor, economic and corporate law, real estate and building, intellectual property and criminalistic examinations. He is a key Ukrainian lawyer specializing in the medical and reproductive field. 

Mr. Antonov has obtained three degrees: Law, Medicine and Criminalistics Examination (expert-criminalist).

In 2009 he completed extension course at the University of Edinburgh Law School (UK).

In 2012 he took a full course of study and received a certificate of a mediator at the Ukrainian Mediation Center basis (Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, a course accredited by CEDR, London, UK). 

He started his carrier as legal consultant at medical institutions where he had an opportunity to acquaint himself with the peculiarities of their functioning, structure and personnel management. Mr. Antonov held senior positions in several major private medical centers; in particular, he was the Deputy Director General at Hospital "LISSOD". He was a partner in large law firms, as well as expert and consultant in the time of opening of health and wellness centers in the United Arab Emirates (2007) and Turkey (2008). 

Mr. Antonov has been a member of the World Association for Medical Law (WALM), and a full member of the the Public Health Law Association (PHLA) since 2006. 

In the CIS countries he is considered to be a leading lawyer specializing in the medical field and reproductive rights. He has the largest practice in Ukraine concerning compensation for damage to health caused by the failure of health care interventions (over 100 processes). Mr. Antonov conducts a business and consults clients not only in Ukraine, but in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and the United Kingdom.

He has successfully advocated clients in civil cases dealing with medical negligence, patients’ rights defense, criminal liability of medical workers according to the articles No.138 (Illegal medical activity), No.139 (Rendering no medical aid to a patient), No.140 (Improper performance of professional duties by medical or pharmaceutical workers), No.143 (Breach of legally established order of organ and tissues transplant), No.202 (Breach of legally established order of economic and banking activity) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

Some of the most important successful law suits:

In 2002 Mr. Antonov won the case (on the defendant’s side) on 1 million UAH moral and property damage  compensation  from the Ukrainian-American Dental Clinic.

In 2004 Mr. Antonov won the case (on the defendant’s side) on 500 000 UAH moral damage compensation for bodily harm from the plastic surgery clinic.

In 2005 Mr. Antonov won the case (on the defendant’s side) on 150 000 UAH moral damage compensation from the Kiev District Clinic for giving no treatment information to the patient.

In 2006 Mr. Antonov won the case (on the plaintiff’s side – Indian pharmaceutical company) on trademark and services property rights, and damage compensation.

In 2007 Mr. Antonov won the case (on the defendant’s side – private dentist) on 400 000 UAH moral and property damage compensation for improper medical service.

In 2008 Mr. Antonov won the case (on the plaintiff’s side – private medical institution) on the compensation charged for the child’s life rescue, the victim of the Chervonograd tragedy (“The Armageddon” case).

In 2009 Mr. Antonov won the case (on the defendant’s side – private hospital) on 2 m and 144 000 UAH moral and property damage compensation for death of the patient.

In 2010 Mr. Antonov won the case (on the defendant’s side – Cord blood bank) on 2 m and 100 000 UAH property damage compensation for improper medical service.

In 2011 Mr. Antonov won the case (on the plaintiff’s side – one of the company cofounder) on the recognition of the rights to the intellectual property (trademark), which had been used by a network of medical institutions to provide medical services.

In 2014 Mr. Antonov won the case (on the plaintiff’s side – patient) on compensation for damage caused by a failed operation and on obligation of the hospital to set an orthopedic prosthesis.

Together with law practice Sergi Antonov is engaged into scientific work, he is a research fellow of Koretsky Institute of state and law of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, PhD in Law. When writing his thesis “Civil and legal responsibility for bodily harm resulted from paid medical services” he used the materials collected during his study course in Sweden and Denmark.

Mr. Antonov is the author of about 200 articles on medico-legal issues. 

He is also a member of editorial board and the author in such magazines as "The MEDICAL PRACTICE: Organizational and Legal Aspects" , "The Medical Law", «The Health Care Institution Management», «The Modern Orthodontics», «The Taking Care of a Woman», «The Taking Care of a Child», «The Hand & Nails», «The Les Nouvelles Estetiques Ukraine». 

Sergi Antonov has developed series (over 30) of specialized seminars and trainings on legal support of medical services and saloons. He as a lecturer and as a coach has conducted more than 500 seminars and trainings.

Mr. Antonov is a coach of two specialized courses "The Legal Regulation of Health Care" and "The Patient Relation Management: Legal and Ethic Aspects" in the MBA Program “Modern Healthcare Management" (International Management Institute - Kyiv). 

He repeatedly represented Ukraine at the World Congress on Medical Law. He was the moderator of sections and round-table discussions on various scientific and practical activities, in particular , at the conference "Management of health centers" in the framework of the exhibition "INTERSHARM”. 

Antonov Sergi is an author of more than a dozen bills in the health field, He also was involved in the working group of the Ministry of Healthcare of Ukraine, the State Committee of Ukraine. Member of the Public Council under the Ministry of Healthcare of Ukraine. 

He was an expert on healthcare issues in the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) “Access to justice and legal awareness in Ukraine”, “Legal country” (2010-2013).

In the April issue of the 2011 prestigious international magazine Forbes (Ukrainian version of publication) Sergei Antonov was recognized as one of the most famous lawyers in Ukraine, who specialized in "medical affairs".

In October 2011, Sergii Antonov became the President of the Association named "Ukrainian foundation of companies on organizational and legal support of assisted reproductive technology programs". This organization represents the interests of agencies and law firms, which provide reproductive program using the methods of assisted reproductive technologies.

In 2013, Sergii Antonov became the President of the Public Union "All-Ukrainian Union "PROTECTED MEDICINE". The Union protects the rights and interests of legal relations in the sphere of medical activity.

In April 2014 Sergii Antonov became a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Supreme Court of Ukraine. 

In November 2016 Sergii finished his studies and received a Master's degree in Law (LLM) at the University of New South Wales (UNSW, Sydney, Australia).
