What is medical tourism?

Medical tourism is a term to describe the rapidly-growing practice of traveling across international borders to obtain health care. Medical tourism gives a possibility to combine vacation and treatment at the best medical centers of the world.

Annually, medical tourism is getting more and more popular, especially in the USA, Canada, and Western Europe. For example, more than 50 million Americans don’t have full-fledged health insurance. Majority of the population does not have health insurance covering chronic diseases, operations, full dental treatment and prosthetics. That’s why many Americans prefer to obtain treatment overseas.  

In spite of the fact that Canada, Great Britain and Sweden cover 90% of medical services costs, but waiting for an appointment with a doctor or  procedure (ultrasound, for instance) can take several months. The average time spent on waiting for elective surgery in these countries constitutes two years.  That is why  patients prefer medical services in Asia, and in Eastern Europe where they can immediately obtain medical services even in more comfortable conditions than at home.

Ukraine and Russia are becoming very popular destination for medical tourists lately, in spite of the fact that Hungary is the main popular destination in Eastern Europe.

In comparison with Hungary, health costs in Ukraine are several times cheaper than those in Hungary, and quality and comfort of healthcare has exceeded Swiss services long ago. Ukraine is a popular destination for obtaining dental care, reproductive and cardiologic services as well as aesthetic (plastic surgery, cosmetology).

As we have mentioned, dental tourism is the most popular sector in a medical tourism, and there are many reasons for it. For example, you have to pay at least 2,500 € for a dental crown at Irish dental clinic and about 500 UAH for the same crown at Kiev, which is dozen times cheaper. Ukrainian dentists’ qualification is equal to that of European doctors.

Patients from abroad (especially from Italy, Germany and Scandinavia) visit Ukraine for fertility treatments (including surrogate maternity and extracorporeal fertilization (in vitro fertilization) because Ukraine has all necessary legal regulations to apply these treatment modes.

It is strange to say, but habitants of CIS countries also discovered all advantages of medical tourism. Treatments tour to Europe, the USA, Israel, and Turkey has become a usual practice.  Equipment and qualification of specialists’ level in foreign medical centers are for the moment higher than in Ukrainian centers, so the treatment is frequently more successful.
